Automatic Flood Barriers

Automatic Flood Barriers are one of the best passive barrier systems on the market today. They have a proven track record for flood protection for critical infrastructure sites, including entrances and parking garages. They are used in major hospitals and federal buildings.

Principally, Automatic Flood Barriers are hinged flotation devices which are installed by laying them flat within the opening to be defended. They have the strength to allow unrestricted passage of either vehicles or pedestrians across the top of it.

The system itself lies within a concrete basin with the top surface of the barrier flush with the ground level. The back edge (the edge furthest from the on-coming water) of the barrier panel is hinged and when flood water flows across the ground, it immediately starts to collect in the basin. This in turn, starts to lift the buoyant panel into a vertical position as the water rises.

Rubber seals are located on either side of the buoyant panel that maintain contact with the side walls preventing flood water from passing through the sides of the panel. Once fully upright, the Automatic Flood Barrier locks itself into the vertical position and maintains a solid and safe flood barrier.

This excellent flood barrier system requires no human intervention whatsoever and has a very low visual impact while providing 24-hour flood protection.
